Debt ridden jeweller spins theft story to claim insurance money

Ahmedabad, Feb 1, 2020: Even as a major theft of jewellery worth Rs56 lakhs ($78,000) from a jewellery shop from a posh areas created a scare amongst shop owners, police investigations in to the case revealed that the story was cooked up by the jeweller himself who had lodged the complaint with the police to claim insurance money.
Detecting the ‘reverse crime,’ Satellite Police said the complainant himself spun the Rs56lakh theft yarn so as to get Rs90lakh insurance claim. The insurance money was to be used to settle huge dues that the jeweller had worked up in the course of his business. But the cops had to literally do a lot of investigation and go to the bottom of the case to unravel the fraud tale.
According to details of the case, Bhaumik Shah, a resident of Vasna area in Ahmedabad owns and operates RS Jewellers, a jewellery shop in the Ramdevnagar area of Satellite in western Ahmedabad. On January 27, Shah filed a complaint with the Satellite Police saying jewellery worth Rs56 lakhs was stolen from his shop by two unknown persons who had come to his shop posing as customers on the same day in the afternoon.
Bhaumik said the duo while engaging him in talks sprayed some chemicals on him which made him unconscious. When Bhaumik regained consciousness after about two hours the duo had made good their escape with different jewellery items totalling Rs56 lakhs.
Satellite Inspector PD Darji said, “During primary questioning, we suspected something fishy in Bhaumik Shah’s story. While we checked the shop’s CCTV footage, we found that the recording was switched off from January 26.” The cops also checked roadside CCTV footage and CCTV footage from nearby shops. The cops found nobody entered the shop from 1.40 to 2.30 in the afternoon as claimed by Bhaumik.
After Bhaumik was taken for forensic examination, he finally confessed to this made-up tale during intense questioning.
