Central Government released Rs1681.88 Crore under crop insurance in last three years in Gujarat benefitting 6.82 lakh farmers -- Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Replies to RS MP Shri Parimal Nathwani

New Delhi, August 14, 2017:- Under various crop insurance scheme, the Central Government has released a total Rs1681.88 crore in Gujarat benefitting a total 6.82 lakh farmers in last three years. Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Purushottam Rupala informed Rajya Sabha on August 11, 2017 in a reply to the question raised by Rajya Sabha member Parimal Nathwani.
According to the statement of the minister, at present, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS), Coconut Palm Insurance Scheme (CPIS) and Pilot Unified Package Insurance Scheme (UPIS) are under implementation in the country.
The minister stated that total 1417.96 lakh farmers across India were insured under various crop insurance schemes of which total 487.99 lakh farmers were benefited by the insurance coverage in last three years. The central government released total 18,516.20 crore under crop insurance schemes including premium subsidy and/or claims, he stated.
Nathwani wanted to know about various crop insurance schemes under implementation in the country and the extent of their coverage; the number of farmers insured and benefited under the various crop insurance schemes during the last three years and the current year and the funds disbursed by Government/insurance companies under various crop insurance schemes.
According to the statement of the minister, as per provisional data available for 2016-17, about 574 lakh farmer applications were received, insuring an area of about 581 lakh hectare in both Kharif and Rabi seasons taken together.
He stated that under crop insurance schemes, Centre/States provide equal share in financial liabilities due to premium subsidy and/or claims as per provisions of specific scheme implemented from time to time.
