SURAT: A complaint was registered at Sarthana police station on Friday in connection with the ruckus that took place outside the BJP election office in Varachha area of the city last night.
Chandreshbhai, Tapubhai, TC, Mama and a group of 15 people were booked under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated) by the police.
A few Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) workers had caused commotion outside the BJP election office on Thursday night. The protesters had come on motorcycles at around 10.45pm shouting 'Jai Sardar Jai Patidar' slogans. They refused to go, forcing the police to resort to lathicharge to disperse them, according to a TNN report.
Congress candidates Dhiru Gajera, Dinesh Kachadia and Bhavesh Rabari and PAAS leader Alpesh Kathiriya, who later arrived there, were among over 25 people detained. Police personnel have now been deployed in the area because these types of protests happen regularly outside the offices of political parties in Patidar-dominated areas of Surat city.
Congress candidates Gajera (Varachha), Kachadia (Surat North) and Rabari (Karanj) had reached Varachha police station along with PAAS convener Kathiriya. There was a large crowd, too, outside the police station. Gajera, Kachadia, Rabari and Kathiriya had heated argument with police officials and so they, too, were detained and released at around 2am with others.
Kathiriya said: "They took us first to Hazira and then to police headquarters and released all of us together.
